The 7th element to www.thegethappinessplan.com is gratifying work. And in some cases either its time to make a decision that working for someone else is no longer tolerable. Or, perhaps due to today's economic times, it isn't possible. In reality, some of the most successful businesses were created during tough economic times such as Amazon, Airbnb, Disney, Uber and many many more small but successful businesses. Why not be among them?
One thing that often prevents people from making that leap is the risk. Let's face it, if you have a secure position today, it may make more sense to cling to it or use strategies to make the role satisfying. However, the question I have, is any job really secure? Today, very little seems certain except that small businesses will always be the real economic engine of America. And, clinging to the job need not be a deterrent but instead a strategy. You can start the business on the side while keeping the security of the job until you are prepared to make the bigger leap. If you are without a job, companies are currently downsizing and hiring is very sluggish with openings receiving hundreds of applicants. So there is very little additional risk to starting your own business.
There are three approaches I recommend to consider when looking to create a business.
1. Do what you already do or know. Leverage existing strengths. For example, if you are a graphics designer for a company, open your own design agency. If you are in construction, start your own firm. This is the least risky as you have contacts, experience, and very little learning curve.
2. Do something different by leverage the proven business formula, branding and marketing of someone else. I am referring to franchises. There is a likely a combination of upfront investment, ongoing royalties and other guidelines adherence. So while the risk is reduced, the freedom is a bit restricted.
3. Do something completely new that you love. Perhaps you have a hobby, e.g. you love to bake pies, or paint or garden, etc. Create a business aligned with your hobby. Or perhaps you have observed a problem that you think you could solve as an entrepreneur so you want to carve out a niche. Or you have seen other businesses such as a franchise but you think you can emulate but do it as well or better on your own.
